Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

After five years of growth, shipments abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -21.1% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

India represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 55% of total exports. Sri Lanka (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by Pakistan (20%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container exports from India stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Pakistan (+51.1%) and Sri Lanka (+18.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Pakistan and Sri Lanka increased by +19 and +13 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container supplying countries in Southern Asia were India ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 100% share of total exports.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +60.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers increased by 3.5% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after six years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X units) was the main importer of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, creating 43% of total imports. Bangladesh (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Pakistan (12%), Nepal (7.6%), Sri Lanka (6.2%) and Bhutan (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Bhutan (with a CAGR of +67.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers in Southern Asia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India totaled +1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bangladesh (+1.5% per year) and Pakistan (-10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Pakistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
