Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -22.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron angle imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 20%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Afghanistan (X tons) represented the main importer of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel), constituting 52% of total imports. Nepal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Bangladesh (12%), India (6.9%) and Sri Lanka (5%). Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Afghanistan increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+25.8%) and Bangladesh (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +25.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-6.0%), Sri Lanka (-7.4%) and India (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Afghanistan (+23 p.p.) and Nepal (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Pakistan (-2.3 p.p.), Sri Lanka (-6.8 p.p.) and India (-31.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Nepal ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 77% share of total imports.
Nepal, with a CAGR of +23.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
