In 2021, purchases abroad of antisera and other blood fractions decreased by -2.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 62%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, antisera imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

India prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), creating a 6.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Sri Lanka (X tons), Nepal (X tons) and Bhutan (X tons) - each reached a 6.5% share of total imports.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +25.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bhutan (+50.8%), Bangladesh (+11.2%) and Nepal (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bhutan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +50.8% from 2012-2021. Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. India (+23 p.p.) and Bhutan (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka saw its share reduced by -5.8%, -7.5% and -11% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported antisera and other blood fractions in Southern Asia, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +9.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+6.6% per year) and Sri Lanka (-3.0% per year).
