The South Asian artificial staple fibre market contracted rapidly to $X in 2021, waning by -18.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Artificial staple fibre exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 219% against 2020 figures. In general, exports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 842% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 451%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India was the key exporter of artificial staple fibres in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), generating an 18% share of total exports. Nepal (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial staple fibres exports, with a CAGR of +35.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+29.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nepal (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+64 p.p.) and Pakistan (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Nepal (-67.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, India ($X) emerged as the largest artificial staple fibre supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to +36.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+39.4% per year) and Nepal (-26.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

For the fourth consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of artificial staple fibres, which increased by 26% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Bangladesh (X tons) represented the main importer of artificial staple fibres, comprising 66% of total imports. India (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nepal (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 31% share of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Bangladesh was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial staple fibres imports, with a CAGR of +30.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+16.7%) and Pakistan (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, India (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan increased by +62, +3.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Nepal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +26.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
