In 2022, the South Asian asparagus market increased by 48% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed buoyant growth. Asparagus Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, asparagus production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Bhutan (X tons) remains the largest asparagus producing country in Southern Asia, comprising approx. 94% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Bhutan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

In 2022, exports of asparagus in Southern Asia dropped notably to X tons, waning by -49.9% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 1,090% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 213% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India represented the key exporter of asparagus in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Bangladesh (9.9%). Sri Lanka (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the asparagus exports, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+26.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Bangladesh (-8.6%) and Sri Lanka (-17.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 12% share.

In India, asparagus exports expanded at an average annual rate of +52.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+19.3% per year) and Bangladesh (-7.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 325% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 346% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of asparagus increased by 45% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 232% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

India was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons), comprising a 36% share of total imports. Maldives (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +47.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, India ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Maldives ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +65.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
