Avocado Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, avocado production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 108%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Sri Lanka (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of avocado production, comprising approx. 97% of total volume. It was followed by Pakistan (X tons), with a 2.8% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Sri Lanka amounted to +4.8%.

In 2022, the average avocado yield in Southern Asia surged to X tons per ha, jumping by 18% on 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the avocado yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of avocados were harvested in Southern Asia; with a decrease of -3.8% on 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to avocado production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of avocados increased by 0.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, avocado exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 427%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Pakistan prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. Sri Lanka (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.5% share, followed by India (5.2%). The following exporters - Afghanistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.5% share of total exports.

Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the avocados exports, with a CAGR of +76.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+36.8%), Bangladesh (+20.3%) and Afghanistan (+16.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh increased by +81, +4 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest avocado supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 4.9% share.

In Pakistan, avocado exports increased at an average annual rate of +78.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (-2.3% per year) and India (+36.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 55%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of avocados increased by 125% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 237% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, avocado imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 216%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

India prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2022. Maldives (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the avocados imports, with a CAGR of +168.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Afghanistan (+31.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Maldives (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+93 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Maldives saw its share reduced by -90.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In India, avocado imports expanded at an average annual rate of +179.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Maldives (-1.3% per year) and Afghanistan (+38.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
