Beer Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian beer market reduced to $X in 2022, waning by -9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 9.5%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of beer were exported in Southern Asia; growing by 13% compared with the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, beer exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +59.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

India was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), achieving a 23% share of total exports. Bhutan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beer exports from India stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+25.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +25.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bhutan (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sri Lanka (+19 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Bhutan and India saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -16.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest beer supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India stood at +4.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+19.8% per year) and Bhutan (-0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of beer increased by 16% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) represented the main importer of beer, constituting 55% of total imports. Maldives (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bangladesh (13%) and Afghanistan (5.6%). The following importers - Nepal (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - each finished at a 3.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to beer imports into India stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Nepal (+6.2%) and Maldives (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bangladesh (-4.4%), Afghanistan (-16.2%) and Sri Lanka (-35.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+40 p.p.), Maldives (+16 p.p.), Bangladesh (+5 p.p.) and Nepal (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Afghanistan and Sri Lanka saw its share reduced by -7.4% and -48.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in Southern Asia, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 16% share.

In India, beer imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Maldives (+2.8% per year) and Bangladesh (-6.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
