Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, bentonite imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) represented the main importer of bentonite, generating 71% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together making up a 23% share of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bentonite imports, with a CAGR of +32.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+19.1%), Pakistan (+11.2%), Sri Lanka (+4.7%) and Nepal (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bentonite in Southern Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 7.6% share.

In India, bentonite imports increased at an average annual rate of +24.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+6.9% per year) and Bangladesh (+13.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
