Cabbage Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian cabbage market fell to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Cabbage Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, cabbage production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of cabbage production was India (X tons), accounting for 94% of total volume. Moreover, cabbage production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (X tons), more than tenfold.

In India, cabbage production increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average cabbage yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year. In 2022, the amount of cabbage and other brassicas exported in Southern Asia shrank rapidly to X tons, with a decrease of -67.5% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 262%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cabbage exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 166%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Bangladesh (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main exporters of cabbage and other brassicas in Southern Asia, together constituting 73% of total exports. Nepal (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Pakistan (6.1%). Afghanistan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +93.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage supplying countries in Southern Asia were Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Nepal ($X), together accounting for 86% of total exports. Afghanistan and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Among the main exporting countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +96.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of cabbage and other brassicas imported in Southern Asia surged to X tons, growing by 102% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cabbage imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 159% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together achieving a 31% share of total imports. Maldives (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Afghanistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cabbage and other brassicas imports, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+24.8%) and India (+8.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Maldives (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Afghanistan (+59 p.p.) and Pakistan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Maldives (-28.7 p.p.) and India (-33.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cabbage and other brassicas in Southern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Maldives, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Afghanistan amounted to +32.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+21.1% per year) and Maldives (-1.2% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -32.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 64%.
