The South Asian trailer and semi-trailer market amounted to $X in 2022, with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

After five years of growth, overseas shipments of cargo trailers and semi-trailers decreased by -81.1% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 145% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +17.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, India (X units) represented the key exporter of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, making up 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X units), committing a 36% share of total exports. Pakistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +10.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest trailer and semi-trailer supplying countries in Southern Asia were Sri Lanka ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +8.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 359% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible expansion. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per unit), while Pakistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Trailer And Semi-Trailer Imports

Imports in Southern Asia

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of cargo trailers and semi-trailers decreased by -40.7% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 65%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Afghanistan (X units) represented the major importer of cargo trailers and semi-trailers, constituting 57% of total imports. India (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Bangladesh (9.4%). Pakistan (X units) and Nepal (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to trailer and semi-trailer imports into Afghanistan stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Nepal (+41.4%), Pakistan (+23.3%), Bangladesh (+2.0%) and India (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +41.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh increased by +5.7, +3.2, +3 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), India ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 83% of total imports. Pakistan and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Nepal, with a CAGR of +21.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 61% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per unit), while Afghanistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
