Cassava Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian cassava market reached $X in 2022, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cassava Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, cassava production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a mild slump. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +9.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Sri Lanka represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), mixing up a 35% share of total exports.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) and India ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 38%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka totaled $X per ton.

In 2022, imports of cassava in Southern Asia declined sharply to X tons, reducing by -38.9% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 558%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cassava imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 436%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Maldives dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2022. India (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Maldives was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cassava imports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2022. India (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Maldives increased by +71 percentage points.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cassava in Southern Asia, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 1.8% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while India stood at $X per ton.
