In value terms, caustic soda exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 142%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

India dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+52.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +52.0% from 2012-2021. Bangladesh (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest caustic soda supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

In India, caustic soda exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India totaled $X per ton.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

India dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Bangladesh (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the caustic soda imports, with a CAGR of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Bangladesh (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +10 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported caustic soda in Southern Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 7% share.

In India, caustic soda imports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (-12.3% per year) and Sri Lanka (-3.6% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep downturn.
