Cement Clinker Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian cement clinker market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of cement clinker exported in Southern Asia plummeted to X tons, which is down by -63.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 93% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cement clinker exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Pakistan prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), achieving a 7.3% share of total exports.

Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cement clinker exports, with a CAGR of +38.9% from 2012 to 2022. India (-18.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Pakistan (+87 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-84.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest cement clinker supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Pakistan totaled +36.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India stood at $X per ton.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, imports of cement clinker in Southern Asia fell to X tons, shrinking by -9.1% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +8.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Bangladesh represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons) and India (X tons), together comprising a 17% share of total imports. Nepal (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cement clinker imports into Bangladesh stood at +3.8%. At the same time, India (+7.6%) and Nepal (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bangladesh (+5.2 p.p.) and India (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Sri Lanka (-7.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cement clinker in Southern Asia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 6.5% share.

In Bangladesh, cement clinker imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (-3.8% per year) and India (+3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -2.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Sri Lanka ($X per ton) and Nepal ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) and Bangladesh ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
