Ceramic Tile Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, the South Asian ceramic tile market increased by 0.5% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic tile production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +97.1% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia

After ten years of growth, shipments abroad of ceramic tiles decreased by -5.2% to X square meters in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 83% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, ceramic tile exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The biggest shipments were from India (X square meters), together amounting to 100% of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ceramic tiles exports, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012 to 2022. India (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest ceramic tile supplier in Southern Asia.

In India, ceramic tile exports expanded at an average annual rate of +32.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per square meter in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, the amount of ceramic tiles imported in Southern Asia shrank dramatically to X square meters, which is down by -15.7% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic tile imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nepal (X square meters) represented the major importer of ceramic tiles, constituting 45% of total imports. Sri Lanka (X square meters) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bangladesh (11%), Pakistan (10%) and India (5.6%). Bhutan (X square meters) and Maldives (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nepal increased at an average annual rate of +15.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bhutan (+45.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bhutan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +45.1% from 2012-2022. Maldives experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-3.7%), Bangladesh (-6.7%), Pakistan (-13.1%) and India (-22.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nepal (+40 p.p.), Sri Lanka (+4 p.p.) and Bhutan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-12.6 p.p.) and India (-34.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest ceramic tile importing markets in Southern Asia were Nepal ($X), India ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X), together accounting for 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Bhutan, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Bhutan, with a CAGR of +36.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per square meter), while Bhutan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
