Other Cereals Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, the South Asian other cereals market increased by 7.4% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Other Cereals Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, other cereals production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 13%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

India (X tons) remains the largest other cereals producing country in Southern Asia, comprising approx. 89% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nepal (X tons), more than tenfold.

In India, other cereals production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Nepal (+0.5% per year) and Bhutan (+0.8% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of other cerealses in Southern Asia fell to X tons per ha, approximately equating the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the other cereals yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of other cerealses production in Southern Asia contracted to X ha, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, other cereals exports in Southern Asia fell to X tons, which is down by -8.5% on 2020. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 794% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 435%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of other cerealses, namely India, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses exports, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest other cereals supplier in Southern Asia.

In India, other cereals exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 37%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of other cerealses increased by 34% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 184%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, other cereals imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 79%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Pakistan represented the key importer of other cerealses in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 64% of total imports in 2021. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Maldives (11%) and India (5.8%).

Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses imports, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Maldives (+23.6%), Sri Lanka (+15.1%) and India (+14.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Pakistan (+39 p.p.) and Maldives (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of India (-2.1 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (-5.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other cerealses in Southern Asia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 12% share.

In Maldives, other cereals imports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+20.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+14.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -32.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
