Cheese Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, the South Asian cheese market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2021.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cheese exports, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest cheese supplier in Southern Asia.

In India, cheese exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

In 2021, purchases abroad of cheese was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cheese imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -17.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 37% of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Pakistan (9.2%), Maldives (8.8%), India (8.4%), Bhutan (7.5%) and Bangladesh (6.9%).

Afghanistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cheese imports, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Maldives (+20.4%), Bangladesh (+15.4%), Sri Lanka (+6.3%), India (+1.3%) and Bhutan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Pakistan (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Afghanistan, Maldives and Bangladesh increased by +25, +5.2 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Maldives ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 58% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Maldives, with a CAGR of +20.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bhutan (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
