Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 1,365% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,127% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, India (X tons) represented the main exporter of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) in Southern Asia, comprising 100% of total export.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) exports, with a CAGR of -9.1% from 2012 to 2021. India (+72 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest sulphite wood pulp supplier in Southern Asia.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) were imported in Southern Asia; waning by -30.1% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 446% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 393%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Pakistan represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), committing a 23% share of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) imports, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Sri Lanka (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Pakistan (+14 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X), India ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 34% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
