Chestnut Market Size in Southern Asia

After two years of growth, the South Asian chestnut market decreased by -7.3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Chestnut Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, chestnut production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Afghanistan (X tons), India (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together accounting for 98% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +2.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of chestnuts were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 693% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chestnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 504% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Afghanistan represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 69% of total exports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Pakistan (7.7%).

Afghanistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chestnuts exports, with a CAGR of +67.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, India (+47.8%) and Pakistan (+39.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Afghanistan (+30 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Pakistan (-14.5 p.p.) and India (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest chestnut supplying countries in Southern Asia were Afghanistan ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 97% share of total exports.

Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +59.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

For the sixth year in a row, Southern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of chestnuts, which increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 241% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The purchases of the one major importers of chestnuts, namely Afghanistan, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
