Chick Peas Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the South Asian chick peas market, when its value decreased by -3.3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. For the third consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded decline in overseas purchases of chick peas, which decreased by -34% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Bangladesh represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 57% of total imports. India (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Pakistan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+15.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-2.0%), Pakistan (-11.3%) and India (-16.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bangladesh (+39 p.p.) and Nepal (+7.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Pakistan and India saw its share reduced by -11% and -36.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chick peas in Southern Asia, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Bangladesh stood at +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (-17.8% per year) and Pakistan (-13.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
