India (X tons) remains the largest chicken meat producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 59% of total volume. Moreover, chicken meat production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), twofold. Sri Lanka (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.7% share.

In India, chicken meat production increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Pakistan (+9.0% per year) and Sri Lanka (+6.9% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of chicken meat in Southern Asia fell to X kg per head, reducing by -10.7% against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the yield increased by 10%. In 2021, the amount of chicken meat exported in Southern Asia reached X tons, picking up by 2.3% against the year before. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -40.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (-0.7% per year) and Sri Lanka (+3.5% per year).

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas purchases of chicken meat were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Afghanistan represented the key importer of chicken meat in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to chicken meat imports into Afghanistan stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Bhutan (+15.3%) and Maldives (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bhutan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012-2021. In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Maldives ($X) and Bhutan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Bhutan, with a CAGR of +15.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
