Pimenta Pepper Production in Southern Asia
In value terms, pimenta pepper production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of pimenta pepper production was India (X tons), accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, pimenta pepper production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Pakistan (X tons), with a 5% share.
In India, pimenta pepper production increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+9.9% per year) and Pakistan (-1.7% per year).
In 2022, the average pimenta pepper yield in Southern Asia declined to X tons per ha, falling by -12.2% against 2021. The yield indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper yield increased by +26.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then shrank in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The pimenta pepper harvested area expanded to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 2.8% against 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pimenta pepper production attained the maximum at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -27.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 53%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, pimenta pepper exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 56%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from India (X tons), together amounting to 99% of total export.
India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pimenta pepper. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest pimenta pepper supplier in Southern Asia.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +7.3%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper export price increased by +62.5% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -21.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pimenta pepper imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Sri Lanka (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X tons), making up a 9.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +4.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Nepal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 93% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +11.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pimenta pepper import price increased by +101.1% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
