Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. In 2021, India (X litres), Pakistan (X litres) and Sri Lanka (X litres) represented the main exporter of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in Southern Asia, making up 81% of total export. It was distantly followed by Nepal (X litres), generating a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

For the third consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded decline in purchases abroad of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, which decreased by -37.6% to X litres in 2021. Overall, imports saw a precipitous slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cider, perry and mead imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X litres), distantly followed by Maldives (X litres), Afghanistan (X litres), Bhutan (X litres), Sri Lanka (X litres) and Nepal (X litres) were the key importers of cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages, together creating 94% of total imports. Pakistan (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +18.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cider, perry, mead and other fermented beverages in Southern Asia, comprising 60% of total imports.
