The South Asian helicopter market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 43% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2022, approx. X units of civil helicopters were exported in Southern Asia; growing by 7.5% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. India was the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 51% of total exports. Sri Lanka (X units) held a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Afghanistan (9.3%) and Bangladesh (9.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest helicopter supplying countries in Southern Asia were Sri Lanka ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +44.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 352% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per unit), while Afghanistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+47.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, imports of civil helicopters in Southern Asia fell sharply to X units, with a decrease of -19.5% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 74%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, helicopter imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 190%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, India (X units) represented the key importer of civil helicopters, committing 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X units), Afghanistan (X units), Pakistan (X units), Nepal (X units) and Sri Lanka (X units), together generating a 51% share of total imports. Maldives (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of civil helicopters. At the same time, Maldives (+9.1%) and Bangladesh (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported civil helicopters in Southern Asia, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 4.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India stood at +5.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bangladesh (+14.2% per year) and Nepal (+4.5% per year).
