In 2022, the South Asian market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by 254% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 33%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production of growth failed to regain momentum.
India (X tons) remains the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 72% of total volume. Moreover, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Sri Lanka (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in India was relatively modest.
The average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres reached X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 7.8%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres production in Southern Asia shrank modestly to X ha, declining by -1.6% against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -8.7% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 51%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
India was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), making up a 30% share of total exports.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India increased by +9.4 percentage points.
In value terms, the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplying countries in Southern Asia were India ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X).
India, with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+3.2%).

Imports in Southern Asia
Imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres was estimated at X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons), distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), Nepal (X tons), Maldives (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main importers of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, together constituting 99% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Southern Asia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 7.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-9.7% per year) and Nepal (+13.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Maldives ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
