Composite Paperboard Market Size in Southern Asia
The South Asian composite paperboard market stood at $X in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Southern Asia
In 2021, shipments abroad of composite paper and paperboard increased by 241% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 365% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, composite paperboard exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
India prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), creating a 7.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to composite paperboard exports from India stood at +19.6%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+57.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +57.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh increased by +6.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest composite paperboard supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to +7.7%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (-5.1%).

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, approx. X tons of composite paper and paperboard were imported in Southern Asia; picking up by 45% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, composite paperboard imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) represented the main importer of composite paper and paperboard, generating 63% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), constituting a 31% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to composite paperboard imports into India stood at -4.2%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+11.0%) and Bangladesh (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +11.0% from 2012-2021. Sri Lanka (+20 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while India saw its share reduced by -20.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest composite paperboard importing markets in Southern Asia were India ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.
Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +12.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
