In 2021, India (X tons) represented the key exporter of copper bars, wire and plates, generating 67% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons). All these countries together held near 28% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper bars, wire and plates exports from India stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Pakistan (+20.3%) and Bangladesh (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2021. In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest copper bars, wire and plates supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +7.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (+22.8% per year) and Bangladesh (+18.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 27% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of copper bars, wire and plates was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper bars, wire and plates imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
India prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2021. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a 5.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Bangladesh (5.3%). Nepal (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+8.8%), Bangladesh (+4.4%) and Pakistan (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of India (+2.9 p.p.) and Nepal (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Sri Lanka (-1.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper bars, wire and plates in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 6.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+2.5% per year) and Bangladesh (+3.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
