In 2021, the South Asian copper wire market decreased by -2.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper wire exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
India was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 71% of total exports. Bangladesh (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Pakistan (6.1%) and Sri Lanka (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper wire exports from India stood at +7.5%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+18.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2021. Pakistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India and Bangladesh increased by +22 and +13 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest copper wire supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to +9.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+19.0% per year) and Pakistan (+4.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 24% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, copper wire export price increased by +65.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 44%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in India ($X per ton) and Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of copper wire increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
India prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2021. Sri Lanka (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nepal (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 12% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+21.1%) and Nepal (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012-2021. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of India (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Bangladesh (-2.8 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (-7.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper wire in Southern Asia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India totaled +12.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+2.4% per year) and Nepal (+10.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 36% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
