Cottonseed Market Size in Southern Asia
The South Asian cottonseed market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, falling by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a perceptible reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Cottonseed Production in Southern Asia
In value terms, cottonseed production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 45%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
India (X tons) remains the largest cottonseed producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 82% of total volume. Moreover, cottonseed production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), fivefold.
In India, cottonseed production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
Cottonseed Exports
Exports in Southern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of cottonseed decreased by -50.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 119% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cottonseed exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 219%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
India dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cottonseed exports from India stood at -18.0%. At the same time, Pakistan (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Pakistan (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of India (-2.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest cottonseed supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 2% share of total exports.
In India, cottonseed exports increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+27.9%).
Cottonseed Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
In 2022, overseas purchases of cottonseed decreased by -62.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 289% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cottonseed imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 179%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
India represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 82% of total imports. Nepal (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Afghanistan (6.6%). Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cottonseed imports, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+22.6%) and Bangladesh (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Afghanistan (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+34 p.p.), Afghanistan (+6.6 p.p.) and Nepal (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Bangladesh (-2.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cottonseed in Southern Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nepal ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 12% share.
In India, cottonseed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nepal (+26.4% per year) and Bangladesh (+8.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
