The South Asian crude maize oil market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption posted mild growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 243% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, crude maize oil exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

The shipments of the one major exporters of crude maize (corn) oil, namely Bangladesh, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Bangladesh was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crude maize (corn) oil exports, with a CAGR of +108.8% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Bangladesh (+98 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) also remains the largest crude maize oil supplier in Southern Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bangladesh totaled +97.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 102%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Bangladesh.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of crude maize (corn) oil, when their volume increased by 59% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 280%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crude maize oil imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a strong increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Maldives represented the largest importer of crude maize (corn) oil in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2022. Pakistan (X tons) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sri Lanka (14%) and India (4.7%). Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +0.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crude maize (corn) oil in Southern Asia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 12% share.

In India, crude maize oil imports increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Maldives (+1.2% per year) and Sri Lanka (+7.6% per year).
