In 2022, Afghanistan (X tons) represented the major exporter of marble and travertine, creating 71% of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by India (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total exports.
Afghanistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble and travertine exports, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+25.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of marble and travertine were imported in Southern Asia; falling by -32.1% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 147% against the previous year. Over the period under review, crude imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 85%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
Pakistan represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), committing a 21% share of total imports. The following importers - India (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.6% share of total imports.
Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble and travertine imports, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+24.3%) and Nepal (+23.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, India (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal increased by +63, +17 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in Southern Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 3.3% share.
