Toy Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian toy market expanded modestly to $X in 2021, increasing by 1.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, toy production expanded to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Toy exports soared to X tons in 2021, growing by 56% on the year before. In general, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, toy exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

India represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 55% of total exports. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 31% share, followed by Sri Lanka (14%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +53.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest toy supplying countries in Southern Asia were India ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X), together accounting for 100% of total exports.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +60.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of dolls and toys was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toy imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sri Lanka was the main importer of dolls and toys in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by India (10%) and Pakistan (7%). The following importers - Nepal (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) - each reached a 4% share of total imports.

Sri Lanka was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dolls and toys imports, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+29.5%), Maldives (+16.0%) and Nepal (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Pakistan (-5.2%) and India (-26.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sri Lanka (+57 p.p.), Bangladesh (+17 p.p.) and Maldives (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while India saw its share reduced by -79.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dolls and toys in Southern Asia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 17% share.

In Sri Lanka, toy imports increased at an average annual rate of +41.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+41.4% per year) and India (-16.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -26.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 141% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
