Domestic Appliances Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, the South Asian domestic appliances market decreased by -1.3% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, domestic appliances production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 10%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of domestic appliances was finally on the rise to reach X units after four years of decline. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, domestic appliances exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X units), committing a 4.8% share of total exports. Bangladesh (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to domestic appliances exports from India stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+23.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +23.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Pakistan (-20.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest domestic appliances supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 7.7% share of total exports.

In India, domestic appliances exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-5.2% per year) and Bangladesh (+7.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per unit), while Bangladesh ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, approx. X units of domestic appliances were imported in Southern Asia; increasing by 16% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 25%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

India represented the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which accounted for 61% of total imports. Bangladesh (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Sri Lanka (X units), Nepal (X units) and Pakistan (X units). All these countries together took approx. 35% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+20.4%), Nepal (+17.8%) and Sri Lanka (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2021. Pakistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Afghanistan (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Bangladesh (+9.7 p.p.) and Nepal (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Pakistan, Afghanistan and India saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -3.9% and -8.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported domestic appliances in Southern Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 6.6% share.

In India, domestic appliances imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+7.0% per year) and Sri Lanka (+3.8% per year).
