Afghanistan dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), creating a 9.1% share of total exports.

Afghanistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried prunes exports, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012 to 2022. Pakistan (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Afghanistan (+47 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Pakistan (-32.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) remains the largest dried prune supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Afghanistan amounted to +16.0%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Imports in Southern Asia

For the fourth year in a row, Southern Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of dried prunes, which increased by 45% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 229%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dried prune imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Pakistan (X tons) was the largest importer of dried prunes, committing 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), comprising a 15% share of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried prunes imports, with a CAGR of +52.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, India (+17.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Bangladesh (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Pakistan, with a CAGR of +43.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
