Eggplant Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, the South Asian eggplant market decreased by -0.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 234%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, eggplant exports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 279%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), creating a 9.8% share of total exports. Pakistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +27.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bangladesh (+27.7%) and Pakistan (+25.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India and Bangladesh increased by +29 and +3.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest eggplant supplying countries in Southern Asia were Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +23.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -75.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 88%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (-3.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

For the fourth year in a row, Southern Asia recorded decline in purchases abroad of eggplants (aubergines), which decreased by -8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports faced a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Afghanistan (X tons), distantly followed by Bhutan (X tons), Maldives (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the largest importers of eggplants (aubergines), together committing 99% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest eggplant importing markets in Southern Asia were Bhutan ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Maldives ($X), together comprising 83% of total imports.

Bhutan, with a CAGR of +12.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 48%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Afghanistan (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
