In 2021, meat meals and pellets exports in Southern Asia surged to X tons, growing by 340% against 2020. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 393%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, meat meals and pellets exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a precipitous setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 596%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
India was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons), together constituting a 23% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to meat meals and pellets exports from India stood at -28.4%. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+83.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +83.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-23.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Pakistan (+6.8 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -11.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) emerged as the largest meat meals and pellets supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.
In India, meat meals and pellets exports decreased by an average annual rate of -30.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (-24.2% per year) and Sri Lanka (+48.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of flours, meals and pellets of meat or meat offal decreased by -6.1% to X tons, falling for the sixth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, meat meals and pellets imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Sri Lanka (X tons) represented the largest importer of flours, meals and pellets of meat or meat offal, mixing up 46% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 31% share, followed by Bhutan (11%) and Pakistan (7.7%). India (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +37.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and India ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 91% of total imports. Pakistan and Bhutan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.5%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, meat meals and pellets import price increased by +78.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
