After three years of decline, the South Asian frozen potato market increased by 3.7% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 20%. In 2021, shipments abroad of frozen potatoes increased by 24% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 296%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, frozen potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 150%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
India was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), committing a 34% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +25.8%).
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest frozen potato supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India amounted to +30.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 138%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.7%).

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of frozen potatoes decreased by -52.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen potato imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 57%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nepal (X tons) represented the key importer of frozen potatoes, creating 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Maldives (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together constituting a 28% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Nepal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen potatoes imports, with a CAGR of +37.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+18.7%), Pakistan (+15.8%), Maldives (+12.4%) and Sri Lanka (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Afghanistan (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nepal (+56 p.p.) and Pakistan (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka and Afghanistan saw its share reduced by -7.3% and -15.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest frozen potato importing markets in Southern Asia were Nepal ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), with a combined 77% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Nepal, with a CAGR of +43.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 58% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a deep downturn. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nepal (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
