Garlic Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian garlic market stood at $X in 2022, rising by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Garlic Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, garlic production rose sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of garlic production, comprising approx. 82% of total volume. The third position in this ranking was held by Pakistan (X tons), with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in India totaled +9.6%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bangladesh (+7.8% per year) and Pakistan (+6.4% per year).

In 2022, the average garlic yield in Southern Asia was estimated at X tons per ha, remaining stable against 2021. The yield indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic yield decreased by -0.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, garlic exports in Southern Asia soared to X tons, surging by 240% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 272% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 381%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

India dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Afghanistan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of garlic. At the same time, Afghanistan (+45.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2022. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 92%. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic import price decreased by -37.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
