Glutamic acid exports surged to X tons in 2022, increasing by 21% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 188%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glutamic acid exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 54%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

India prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2022. Bangladesh (X tons) took a 9.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nepal (5.9%). The following importers - Afghanistan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - together made up 5.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to glutamic acid imports into India stood at +9.0%. At the same time, Afghanistan (+62.3%), Bangladesh (+11.5%) and Nepal (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +62.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+26 p.p.), Bangladesh (+4.4 p.p.) and Afghanistan (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka saw its share reduced by -5.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glutamic acid and its salts in Southern Asia, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Nepal, with a 3.7% share.

In India, glutamic acid imports increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+11.4% per year) and Nepal (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country
