Grape Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was decline in the South Asian grape market, when its value decreased by -1.8% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Grape Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, grape production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

India (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of grape production, comprising approx. 75% of total volume. Moreover, grape production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Afghanistan (X tons), threefold.

In India, grape production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Afghanistan (+5.6% per year) and Pakistan (+3.2% per year).

In 2022, exports of grapes in Southern Asia rose slightly to X tons, picking up by 3.1% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a prominent expansion. In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest grape supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild downturn. Imports in Southern Asia

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of grapes decreased by -21.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 105%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, grape imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 91% of total imports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), committing a 5% share of total imports. Nepal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapes in Southern Asia, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 7.8% share.

In Bangladesh, grape imports increased at an average annual rate of +42.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+11.2% per year) and India (+5.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grape import price decreased by -33.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 69%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nepal ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
