In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the South Asian gummed paper market, when its value decreased by -10.3% to $X. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 104%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, gummed paper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 85%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
India prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +21.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+53.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +53.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of India (+7.3 p.p.) and Pakistan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest gummed paper supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.
In India, gummed paper exports increased at an average annual rate of +28.8% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.7%).

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives), when their volume decreased by -21.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gummed paper imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together generating a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - Pakistan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.
Imports into India decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sri Lanka (+20.6%), Nepal (+14.7%) and Bangladesh (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sri Lanka emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal increased by +6.5, +2.8 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gummed paper and paperboard (excluding self-adhesives) in Southern Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with an 8.2% share.
In India, gummed paper imports decreased by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (+20.2% per year) and Bangladesh (-1.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 58% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
