Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, when their volume decreased by -39.2% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +42.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+30.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2021. Bangladesh (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -4.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest hairpin supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +6.3%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 61% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a buoyant expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+14.6%).

Imports in Southern Asia

After four years of decline, purchases abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers increased by 69% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

India represented the key importer of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 45% of total imports in 2021. Pakistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Sri Lanka (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 50% share of total imports. Afghanistan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into India decreased at an average annual rate of -20.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Afghanistan (+30.4%), Pakistan (+4.8%) and Sri Lanka (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bangladesh (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan increased by +19, +16 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in Southern Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 6.1% share.

In Pakistan, hairpin imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (-15.9% per year) and Sri Lanka (-3.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -11.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 213% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
