Hand Tools Market Size in Southern Asia

For the third consecutive year, the South Asian hand tools market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, faced a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hand tools production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 28%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, exports of hand tools in Southern Asia soared to X tons, increasing by 99% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand tools exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

India dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of hand tools. At the same time, Pakistan (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2021. India (-1.6 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest hand tools supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -21% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hand tools export price decreased by -22.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while India totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.8%).

Imports in Southern Asia

Hand tools imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 52% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports posted a strong increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hand tools imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) was the major importer of hand tools, making up 67% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Pakistan (8.6%) and Sri Lanka (7.2%). Nepal (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hand tools imports, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Pakistan (+7.8%), Bangladesh (+6.0%), Sri Lanka (+5.6%) and Nepal (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of India (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nepal (-2.5 p.p.), Sri Lanka (-2.8 p.p.) and Bangladesh (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hand tools in Southern Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 6.7% share.

In India, hand tools imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bangladesh (+11.4% per year) and Sri Lanka (+7.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 32%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
