Hazelnut Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, the South Asian hazelnut market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption posted mild growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Hazelnut Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, hazelnut production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 3,537%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X tons) remains the largest hazelnut producing country in Southern Asia, comprising approx. 90% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in India was relatively modest.

Hazelnut Exports

Exports in Southern Asia

For the fourth consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of hazelnuts, which decreased by -97.7% to X kg in 2021. Overall, exports faced a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 18,490%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 42,810%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, India (X kg) and Sri Lanka (X kg) represented the major exporters of hazelnuts in Southern Asia, together resulting at near 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X kg), achieving a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of -13.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest hazelnut supplying countries in Southern Asia were Sri Lanka ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X).

In terms of the main exporting countries, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of -5.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 131%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hazelnut Imports

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of hazelnuts, when their volume increased by 94% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 174%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 290% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2021. India (X tons) took a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sri Lanka (6.6%). Pakistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Afghanistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of hazelnuts. At the same time, Pakistan (+24.3%) and Sri Lanka (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Afghanistan (+23 p.p.), Sri Lanka (+2.6 p.p.), Pakistan (+2 p.p.) and India (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Southern Asia, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 5.2% share.

In Afghanistan, hazelnut imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-2.8% per year) and Pakistan (+43.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
