Canned Meat Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in the South Asian canned meat market, when its value increased by 0.9% to $X. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -19.3% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -21.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of canned meat increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 48%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, canned meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 141%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons) were the major exporters of canned meat in 2021, finishing at approx. 41% and 33% of total exports, respectively. Sri Lanka (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Bangladesh (11%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +23.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest canned meat supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Pakistan amounted to +18.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sri Lanka (+19.4% per year) and India (+2.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, canned meat export price decreased by -25.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of canned meat, when their volume increased by 27% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons), Maldives (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons) represented roughly 92% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), mixing up a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +19.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Maldives ($X), India ($X) and Afghanistan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 57% of total imports. These countries were followed by Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which together accounted for a further 41%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +26.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
