Honey Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian honey market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -11.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a drastic downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Honey Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, honey production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20%. India prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 94% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), committing a 5.2% share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the honey exports, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Pakistan (-1.5 p.p.) decreased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of honey were imported in Southern Asia; picking up by 8.7% compared with the year before. Overall, imports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, honey imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The purchases of the three major importers of honey, namely Nepal, India and Bangladesh, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons) and Maldives (X tons), together committing a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Sri Lanka (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +23.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest honey importing markets in Southern Asia were India ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Nepal ($X), together accounting for 74% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nepal, with a CAGR of +20.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
