In 2021, overseas shipments of household hand tools increased by 134% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, household hand tools exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
India dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), constituting a 4.9% share of total exports. Bangladesh (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to household hand tools exports from India stood at -11.4%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+41.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +41.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh and Pakistan increased by +3.7 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest household hand tools supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to -9.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+37.7% per year) and Pakistan (-5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -47.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 84%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Household Hand Tools Imports
Imports in Southern Asia
Household hand tools imports surged to X tons in 2021, jumping by 57% against 2020 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, household hand tools imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
India was the key importer of household hand tools in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 45% of total imports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Pakistan (20%) and Sri Lanka (11%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to household hand tools imports into India stood at +8.7%. At the same time, Pakistan (+35.3%) and Bangladesh (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +35.3% from 2012-2021. Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Pakistan (+17 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sri Lanka saw its share reduced by -13.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X), India ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 81% of total imports. Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 14%.
Pakistan, with a CAGR of +42.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
