Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of illuminated signs and illuminated name-plates decreased by -12.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 209% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, illuminated sign exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 243% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), achieving a 5.2% share of total exports. Sri Lanka (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to illuminated sign exports from India stood at -4.8%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+64.4%) and Sri Lanka (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +64.4% from 2012-2021. Bangladesh (+5.2 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -8.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest illuminated sign supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 1.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India stood at -3.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bangladesh (+38.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+5.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of illuminated signs and illuminated name-plates increased by 87% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 91%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, illuminated sign imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons) were the largest importers of illuminated signs and illuminated name-plates in 2021, amounting to approx. 38% and 32% of total imports, respectively. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Sri Lanka (9.4%). The following importers - Nepal (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +26.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest illuminated sign importing markets in Southern Asia were India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), together accounting for 84% of total imports.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -13.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
