Ink Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian ink market expanded slightly to $X in 2021, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of inks (excluding printing ink) decreased by -6.1% to X tons, falling for the seventh year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ink imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India was the largest importer of inks (excluding printing ink) in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2021. Bangladesh (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Pakistan (7.4%). The following importers - Nepal (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) - together made up 6.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to ink imports into India stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Pakistan (+10.0%) and Bangladesh (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nepal (-1.9%) and Sri Lanka (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh and Pakistan increased by +5.8 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported inks (excluding printing ink) in Southern Asia, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 8.4% share.

In India, ink imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+9.2% per year) and Pakistan (+8.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Nepal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
