Iron Ore Market Size in Southern Asia

In 2021, the South Asian iron ore market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, iron ore production rose notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 360%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of iron ores and concentrates decreased by -31.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 670% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, iron ore exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 369% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of iron ores and concentrates, namely India, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron ores and concentrates exports, with a CAGR of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest iron ore supplier in Southern Asia.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 57% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, iron ore export price increased by +149.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for India amounted to +3.6% per year.

Imports in Southern Asia

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of iron ores and concentrates increased by 522% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron ore imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 249% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

India dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 95% of total imports in 2021. Nepal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nepal (+32.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nepal increased by +3.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron ores and concentrates in Southern Asia, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nepal ($X), with a 2.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India amounted to -1.4%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -48.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
