The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21%. India (X tons) remains the largest lamb and sheep meat producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for 71% of total volume. Moreover, lamb and sheep meat production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in India stood at +5.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Pakistan (+4.9% per year) and Afghanistan (-0.1% per year).
In 2021, the average lamb and sheep meat yield in Southern Asia totaled X kg per head, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 3.5%. In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for lamb and sheep meat production in Southern Asia expanded significantly to X heads, growing by 9.9% against the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lamb and sheep meat exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, India (X tons) was the key exporter of lamb and sheep meat, comprising 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), committing a 27% share of total exports. Bangladesh (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+36.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Pakistan (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+10 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Pakistan (-14 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest lamb and sheep meat supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India stood at -2.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (-5.6% per year) and Bangladesh (+37.7% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. In value terms, Maldives ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lamb and sheep meat in Southern Asia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Maldives stood at +14.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+23.5% per year) and India (+9.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, lamb and sheep meat import price decreased by -5.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
